A bit of play time this evening at the Conformity Assessment Business… What’s in a non-inductive wire wound resistor? I had just purchased some Vishay 10 W pulse capable wire wound resistors and was curious about the winding used. The coating on these is relatively easy to etch off using my fibre laser so I thought I would give it a go tonight. It’s a short clip, but to fully expose the winding took about two minutes or so. As it turns out these are wound using the Ayrton–Perry technique. This uses two individual resistance wires connected in parallel and wound in opposite directions, it is a type of bifilar winding where due to the current flowing in opposite direction in each winding, the magnetic fields cancel so they exhibit a very low inductance. I use these for various low inductance loads and pulse tuning applications in #EMC equipment. I tend to purchase 20 or so at a time and select the one most close to the nominal value.

🌐Digitisation is constantly influencing our working methods at Ringway Worcestershire. 🌐 On previous projects, our teams might have spent a lot of time and resources printing job packs and works information. For larger schemes, our teams would need reams of printed utility stats plans. As a result, we introduced a digital tablet system. Each project team now has a tablet on site, where they are able to refer to various documents to help plan and carry out the works safely and efficiently. The same forms that staff once spent hours filling in, can now be completed online more efficiently, removing the need to print paper documents. This digital move also means that staff who would have been stuck in the office printing multiple plans and forms – are now able to spend more time on site supervising. Our move to digital tablets has greatly benefited us in numerous ways, this has also benefited the public by creating a more time-efficient and environmentally friendly way of working. #Ringway #Worcestershire #RingwayWorcestershire #Digitisation #DigitalTransformation

Testing Testing Testing 123 !! Here we go again and it’s everywhere in the UK. Walking past a shop yesterday I see product recalls happening far too often, especially when this could have been avoided in the first place. What’s even more concerning is how many products are coming into our industry without undergoing proper testing. Our customers deserve to trust the products they buy but as I mentioned the other day no checks are made and it’s ever so easy to copy and paste a logo saying it has been tested and complies with the latest standards. Nobody checks these claims. Product quality and safety has to come first with testing from approved and regulated test houses. I was talking to someone the other day who wanted to buy an RCBO for a low price with no consideration on the cost of testing and using the best components. A product that saves your life. He then bought a latte and a muffin for almost £8.50. “Unfortunately we are in a world where the price of a latte and a muffin has more value than a life saving device” It’s time for a conversation on how we can improve safety standards and ensure that only thoroughly tested products make it into the hands of UK consumers.
